How many loads of laundry do you do a week? With 3 kids and a husband, I’m sure you can imagine the amount of time I spend in my laundry room, so today I’m sharing my tried-and-trues that make laundry day(s), dare I say, enjoyable (okay, maybe just tolerable).
- Okay, yes, everyone has hangers (I hope). But, have you tried having all the same hangers? There’s nothing that makes your closet or laundry hanging space look more organized than unifying your hangers. I use this style, in white, for the majority of my clothes, but pick a style and color that works for you and tell me your closet doesn’t look like The Home Edit spent the day at your house.
- I ditched dryer sheets a couple years ago and switched over to dryer balls. They agitate your clothes, separating them from each other, which decreases drying time and saves energy (aka money), not to mention they are more eco-friendly than their counterpart. I have a set of these Norwex wool dryer balls and a set of rubber drying balls that I use in every load.
- If you take away one thing from reading this post, please let it be the awesome-ness that is Fels-Naptha. It has a really funny name but make no mistake – this laundry stain remover is THE BEST. When you find a stain, dampen the area with water, rub this magic bar on it, then work the Fels-Naptha into the fabric. Rinse, and you’re a good as new. On really tough stains I repeat this process until the stain is gone. With a price like $0.88, you can not go wrong.
- Along with Fels-Naptha, I use this dawn and hydrogen peroxide mixture on the myriad of stains my kids manage to cover their clothes with. It works best on fresh stains, so just spray those pesky spots before it hits the laundry basket for the best results. When clothes are covered in stains, I soak them in my laundry room sink in hot water with a few teaspoons each of dawn and hydrogen peroxide. The next time I do a load, I pull those clothes out of the sink and transfer them straight to the washer.
- Borax Detergent Booster is also another great laundry additive (along with baking soda). It helps your detergent work more efficiently and keeps your clothes squeaky clean.
- When we renovated our laundry
roomsuite 6 years ago, we installed a deep (10″) stainless steel sink and I can’t imagine life without it now. Since we only have two other sinks in our house (the kitchen sink and our only bathroom sink), its very convenient to have this utility sink to soak clothes, wash out paint brushes, etc. We found ours at the Austin area Habitat for Humanity Restore (for $40 no less!) but here is a very similar one. - Around here, we line dry a lot of items (dry-fit shirts anyone?) but sometimes those items don’t fit/stay on a hanger very well. That’s where this drying rack comes in handy. The Container Store calls it a lingerie drying rack but I’ve found many more uses than that.
