Hello! I am so excited to share a new project with you. If you read this post about the recent dresser makeover we (my husband and I) did, then you may have noticed a mention of my sister who just bought a new house. My sister sold her 2-bedroom townhome last month and bought a 3-bedroom house closer to my parents. Its a cute little brick 1-story that backs up to a creek with lovely little turtles that live there. Its perfect for her. Since she bought the house last month, she has had the master bathroom gutted and remodeled, replaced some flooring and painted the entire interior of the house. She is about to move in and she has asked me to help her with her master bedroom design! AND I’M SUPER EXCITED!!!

okay, caps lock aside, for many reasons, my sister deserves a plush, serene master bedroom (I mean, don’t we all?). She’s a girly girl – pink is one of her favorite colors, but she would also paint her entire room black if my mom and I would let her. Growing up, her bedroom was painted hot pink above the chair rail and white with giant black stars below the chair rail. It was definitely a statement. Her love of pink and black is still unwavering but her style has matured since those adolescent days. Here’s an inspiration picture for her new bedroom:

We’re sticking with the pinks, anchoring the room with black finishes, layering lots of white and neutrals and then adding some pops of color (maybe in a greenish-blue/teal color?) Doesn’t that sound dreamy?

Currently the room looks like this:

As I mentioned earlier, the room has just been painted, and new wood-look tile, trim and baseboards were installed, so it truly is a fresh slate.

I’ve started to pull some ideas together for furnishings based on a few requests from my sister (she is pining for a canopy bed) and I’ve put together a mood board for her (and you) to see. I use a mood board so I can see how all of the colors and finishes will look altogether and to see if the overall vibe matches the personality of the person whose room it is, and to see if they (the room owner) connect with the general feel of the composition. A mood board is not necessarily the exact things that will end up in the room but it gives a good starting point for trying to source the things you need/want within your budget.

The style of this master retreat is what I consider eclectic transitional. There are a few funky things (you saw the blooming rose skull, right? my sister loves it!) but there is also a mixture of traditional and modern (the old dresser updated in black).

So, without further ado, I would love to share with you a few options for some of the furnishings and decor that we are considering for this master bedroom. I like to start with the big stuff, then work my way to the little stuff.

Rugs

This Roze rug in blush & grey (pictured above) gave me heart eyes the first time I came across it. It has great muted tones and just enough color. I’ve also been looking at this Waldrop Pink area rug that is more bold and feminine and this Gutierez Abstract Gray and Pink area rug that is more bright and loud.

Canopy Beds

I love the delicate lines of the Novogratz Marion canopy bed (pictured above) and the added detail of the vertical pieces in the headboard and footboard. This Dubay canopy bed is another great option with a little bit thicker frame. This Ropesville canopy bed has a more traditional look and more curve to it, making it lean a little more feminine. And this Higgins canopy bed has a geometric detail in the headboard and footboard to add some interest to a room. We are in the market for a king sized bed, but if you need a queen, might I introduce you to this Avenue Greene Rosemarie canopy bed with her crisscross pattern for you to swoon over? (but seriously, if you buy this bed, please send me pictures!) All of these beds are super inexpensive and would make a grand statement in any room.

Nightstands

This teal night stand (pictured above) would be a great place to add that pop of color to my sister’s bedroom and I am really digging the metal legs. I’ve also always loved this white nightstand with the rope twist legs and little pullout drink tray. I can also see this industrial looking black nightstand working well in the space and the size is great.

And she already has a dresser, its this one that Andrew and I refinished recently. So we are working to incorporate that too.

Bedding + Curtains

When I saw this comforter set I thought it would be a great neutral addition to the room but still has these little pops of black (which is totally my sister’s style) and has added texture and pattern. And this throw blanket and throw pillow would provide some extra luxe. I’m also leaning towards these curtain rods in matte black and white curtains similar to these.

Art + Decor

I found a few prints that lean into our color scheme that could really elevate the space based on the other furnishings we pick, we’ll just have to wait and see how it all comes together!

I also think this mirror would be a great addition to this bedroom (I think it would look lovely over the dresser) and I’m in search of a nice faux fiddle leaf fig (maybe this one or this one) and some other greenery. I will be working on this room for the next several weeks so I’ll let you know if I find anything else.

But you know I will do a big ol’ blog post about the room when it’s done and share alllllll the details with you. Have you been making any mood boards with any extra time you have lately? If so, I’d love to hear about them. Comment below or connect with me on instagram @elleandjaydesign.
